U.S. Brig Niagara -Pennsylvania State Ship Accessible Winter Shelter

The U.S. Brig Niagara was built in 1988 as a reconstruction of the famed warship, aboard which Oliver Hazard Perry won the Battle of Lake Erie during the war of 1812. It is an authentic working ship that is the official State Ship of Pennsylvania.

The “Winter Shelter”, was built to protect the ship in winter months– while still allowing the crew to maintain her and visitors to board her. The cover is a modular series of columns, beams, rafters and breathable waterproof canvas. The structure was designed to be erected/disassembled by the crew within a day. Each piece of the structure is designed specifically for the ship and numbered to a plan. Modular electrical system includes lighting, exit signage and a heating system.

The project was funded by the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission (PHMC) and the appearance of historical accuracy was required.
